Springdale United Methodist Church "Vision"
2010 Vision Template_BPXUECQH.pubCooperative Ministries Embark on Bold, New Project
At the May 25th Methodists United Together Team planning meeting, of the Allegheny Valley Cooperative Ministries decided to take a leap of faith by organizing a new initiative: The Garden Gleaning Project.
What is garden gleaning? Gleaning is the salvaging of perishable food that would otherwise be dumped into landfills or left in a farmer's fields to rot. In an urban setting, it has more to do with harvesting vegetable gardens and fruit trees for their produce. With the recent boom in backyard agriculture, many homeowners find themselves overwhelmed with fruits or vegetables.
Is it Biblical? Yes! Based on Old Testament Scripture, gleaning is a commandment from God as a method to feed the poor, widows and orphans. (See Deuteronomy 24:19 and The Book of Ruth.) The Bible makes clear that it is God's desire that no one goes hungry.
Who will benefit from the Garden Gleaning Project? This year, clients of Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank (Natrona Heights) and the Lower Valley Community Food Bank. (Springdale.)
What else? It's green, that is, environmentally friendly. Donations are tax-deductible. Its cost effective. Most importantly, it helps us love our neighbors!
