Bishops Visit U.S.-Mexico Border --May, 2013

Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton and other United Methodist bishops traveled from a meeting in San Diego to the U.S. border with Mexico to see first-hand how Methodists are ministering to the homeless and others living in poverty there. Bishop Bickerton, who dislikes barriers of any kind, documented the visit, showing the huge border fence where bishops on either side attempted to share communion.

2013 Evangelism Clinics with Mark Mittelberg

Mark Mittelberg, evangelism strategist and primary author of the updated Becoming a Contagious Christian Training Course, was the keynote speaker at the 2013 Western PA Clinics on Evangelism held April 27 at Charter Oak UM Church in Greensburg and April 28 at Lakeside UM Church in DuBois. A total of about 250 attended the clinics.

Homeless Pastor Visits Western PA

Rev. Lorenza Andrade Smith, a pastor who gave up a home, salary and benefits when she requested an appointment to ministry among the homeless on the streets of San Antonio and Austin, Texas, visited Western PA from April 19-24. She told stories of her ministry at a session on poverty sponsored by the Pittsburgh District UMW and at the Greensburg District Conference. She also talked with Bishop Bickerton and his Cabinet and visited 8th Ave. Place in Homestead, Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community in Pittsburgh, and a Circles group in Pitcairn.

NEJ Volunteers in Mission project in Colombia

Volunteers in Mission teams from the Northeastern Jurisdiction of the UMC are helping Methodists in Sincelejo, Columbia to build an addition to El Camino church that will be used for vocational training and youth and adult education. The land was purchased by Colombian Methodists with funding from UMCOR. These photos show the first team, led by NEJ VIM Coordinator Greg Forrester in January, 2013 and the second team, a Western PA group led by Rev. David Stains in April.

Bishop Peter Weaver was guest preacher for a joint Pittsburgh-Greensburg District celebration of the life and ministry of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The service was held at First United Methodist Church in Murrysville on Jan. 20.

Solar Samaritans

A group of men from First United Methodist Church in Somerset has launched a new ministry that provides and installs solar panels on the homes of families who are struggling in some way. It helps with their utility bills.
