June 2011- Connect, Reach Out and Grow This Summer

Wednesday, June 01, 2011

Summer brings many opportunities to grow spiritually, learn, participate in mission outreach and enjoy Christian outdoor activities. Here are some offered by our Western PA Conference for people of all ages. Details and online registration are available at wpaumc.org.

This month, the Western PA Annual Conference session is June 9-12 at Grove City College. Your pastor and a lay representative from your church/charge will attend as voting members, but you are always welcome to come for a few hours, a day or two. Consider taking a class in the Laity Academy. Twelve different classes are offered at 8 p.m. June 8 or 9:30 a.m., June 9. Go to wpaumc.org and click the “Annual Conference” link on the left side of the page.

From July 5-9, youth in grades 6-12 and adult leaders head to the Johnstown area to be part of uth4missions, It’s an exciting opportunity to be the hands and feet of God and see the Spirit working through your willingness to serve others. After a day of service, students can let loose through free time, games, relays, and worship, Bible study and of course Wacky Act night.  (Adults come free, one adult for every 6 youth)

In mid-July, the School of Christian Mission, held at Grove City College, offers spiritual growth sessions; a geographic study; hands-on mission work and the chance to learn about ministries making a difference. Adults choose a four-day (July 11-15) or weekend session (July 15-17). For an overview, Sampler Days are July 12 or 16. Volunteers in Mission leader training will be offered at the weekday session.

For children, Mission Expedition is offered at both sessions. Mission Adventure for 6th to 8th grade youth and Mission Discovery for high school youth are held only during the weekday session.

Volunteers in Mission teams are forming now to work locally, in storm-ravaged areas of the U.S. and in places around the globe this summer. Go to wpaumc.org/VIM for details.

Our three United Methodist camps have openings in several programs. There are a variety of programs for children, youth and families, those with special needs and a few adult camping adventures. Safe, top-quality camping experiences are open to all, regardless of church affiliation. Visit wpaumc.org/camping to see what’s available.
